BIG SUCCESS FOR COLUMBUS DAY FESTIVAL IN TUCKAHOE.

The most amazing amalgam of religious and secular festivities has festooned the Main Depot Plaza in Tuckahoe this past weekend. With the premises of celebrating Columbus Day, the Italians of this quaint small village, second to none in their socializing, delighted themselves in various other festivities, attracting all the neighboring towns’ people.

Focal points of this 3-day event were the Saint Padre Pio Festival and the 100^th year anniversary of the Generoso Pope building. On the first day, to the dismay of the participants, rain was copious and continuous, convincing most stand participants to wait for the end of the rain to open up their sales. Seeming to ignore the elements, a group of devoted parishioners decided the saint had to have its procession. As a result, they brought the statue of Padre Pio from the Assumption church to the Main Depot Plaza on the Tuckahoe Trolley.

The rain did not seem to stop the faithful, who waited patiently while praying fervently to the Saint. On the stage, waiting for the arrival, stood Paul David Pope, the mayor of Tuckahoe Steve Ecklond and Angelo Venuto and his band. Lonely stands which defied the inclement weather were the Cerere Catering and the ever-present Giuseppe Garibaldi Lodge members of the Eastchester-Tuckahoe Sons of Italy.  The Saint remained in the Plaza and the energizing music completed the evening for the bystanders, which by now had grown to a consistent number, being that the rain had subsided.

On the second day of the festival, the surprises titillated enormously the visitors. The music by famous bands of the 70’s (Tavares, Bonnie Pointer, Francie Jolie) was integrated with a state-of-the –art light show, prepared by the 15 year old son of mister Pope, AJ. The phantasmagoric effects impressed everyone beyond belief. The Generoso Pope Building seemed to turn into a birthday cake and the following fireworks by Grucci topped the cake, literally.

Although the third day could not match the pleasant surprises of the preceding one, it ended with a classical “Italian festa” atmosphere of music, games, raffles and, obviously, a lot of food.

Present at the three day festival the young and beautiful Miss Westchester Teen 2012, Jackie Groccia., winner as well of the People’s Choice Award, which is assigned to the contestant who received the highest number of votes from the general public. Miss Groccia was selected among 16 participants. The contestants were judged on poise, grace, stage presence, overall commitment and the result of a personal interview.

Present as well was Miss Columbus Day 2011, Lauren Piacquadio, who has received a $10,000 scholarship from the Generoso Pope Foundation, a sponsor of the Columbus Day Committee of Eastchester-Tuckahoe.

Un amalgama sorprendente di celebrazioni religiose e laiche ha popolato festosamente la Main Depot Plaza di Tuckahoe lo scorso fine settimana. Con le premesse di celebrare il Columbus Day, gli italiani di questo grazioso paese, secondi a nessuno nella loro socializzazione, si sono svagati con vari altri festeggiamenti, attirando molte persone delle città limitrofe.
I punti focali di questi tre giorni di manifestazione sono stati il ​​Festival dedicato a Santo Padre Pio e il 100° anniversario della costruzione dell’edificio Generoso Pope.

Il primo giorno, con la costernazione dei partecipanti, la pioggia è stata abbondante e continua, convincendo gli incaricati di molte bancherelle ad attendere la fine della pioggia per iniziare le loro vendite. Ignorando gli elementi, un gruppo di parrocchiani devoti del Santo aveva deciso che la processione avrebbe avuto il suo corso. Come risultato, hanno trasportato la statua di Padre Pio dalla chiesa dell’Assunzione al Depot Plaza sul caratteristico Trolley di Tuckahoe.
La pioggia non sembrò fermare i fedeli, che hanno aspettato pazientemente, pregando con fervore il Santo. Sul palco, in attesa dell’arrivo, si potevano scorgere l’organizzatore Paul David Pope, il sindaco di Tuckahoe Steve Ecklond e Angelo Venuto e la sua orchestra.  Nelle due bancherelle solitarie che hanno sfidato il maltempo, si trovavano i rappresentanti della Cerere Catering e i sempre presenti soci della Loggia Giuseppe Garibaldi (Eastchester-Tuckahoe) dei Sons of Italy. Il Santo rimase nella Piazza e la musica energizzante ha completato la sera per gli astanti, che ormai avevano raggiunto un numero consistente, giacché il maltempo si era placato.
Il secondo giorno del festival, le sorprese hanno titillato enormemente i visitatori. La musica di gruppi famosi degli anni 70 (Tavares, Bonnie Pointer, Francie Jolie) è stata integrata da uno spettacolo di luci avanguardista, a cura del figlio di quindici anni del signor Pope, AJ. Gli effetti fantasmagorici hanno impressionato tutti oltre ogni immaginazione. L’edificio Generoso Pope sembrava trasformarsi in una torta di compleanno e gli accompagnanti fuochi d’artificio dei fratelli Grucci si sono rivelati letteralmente come le candeline in cima alla torta.
Anche se il terzo giorno non poteva competere con le piacevoli sorprese del precedente, si è concluso con una classica atmosfera di “festa italiana”, con musica, giochi, lotterie e, ovviamente, un’abbondanza di cibo.
Presente al festival nei tre giorni la giovane e bella Miss Westchester Teenager 2012, Jackie Groccia, vincitrice anche del People’s Choice Award, assegnato alla concorrente che ha ricevuto il maggior numero di voti dal pubblico in generale. La signorina Groccia è stata selezionata tra sedici partecipanti. Le concorrenti sono state giudicate sulla compostezza, grazia, presenza scenica, impegno sociale e dal risultato di un colloquio personale con la giuria.
Presente anche Miss Columbus Day 2011, Lauren Piacquadio, che ha recentemente ricevuto una borsa di studio di 10,000 dollari dalla Fondazione Generoso Pope, una degli sponsor delle festività.
